Brand Positioning

In the earliest stages of a company, the idea often exists long before the proof.
SkyMapper had an extraordinary vision, rooted in astronomy, citizen science, emerging technology, and a belief that observing the sky should be more open and collaborative. What it needed was a way to bring all of those pieces together, and help other people see what the founders could already see. We created the first SkyMapper logo, built its early visual language, and worked directly with the founding team to shape the messaging and pitch narrative behind the company. “Mapping all of the sky, all of the time” became the line that brought the entire idea into focus.

From an early idea to a $3 million raise.
Before SkyMapper had a full brand or marketing team, it needed the essential pieces to move forward. We created an early one-page website, pitch decks, one-pagers, and the foundational messaging the team could use to introduce the company to investors, partners, and the wider world. Those early materials did more than make the idea look polished. They gave the company a story people could understand and believe in. SkyMapper went on to raise a $3 million pre-seed round in June 2025. With that milestone behind them, the team returned to Past Midnight ready to build the fuller expression of the brand.
Identity System

Turning a big idea into a world of its own.
Working directly with the founding team, we developed the strategy and creative direction that would carry SkyMapper into its next stage. The brand needed to hold many things at once: scientific credibility, technological ambition, public participation, a sense of wonder, and the seriousness of building infrastructure that could change how we observe the sky. We created a visual and narrative system that felt expansive but grounded, capable of speaking to astronomers, investors, institutional partners, educators, telescope owners, and people simply curious about what might be above them.

Bringing the full story into view.
SkyMapper had grown beyond a single idea. Its story now included connected telescopes, all-sky cameras, software, data, partnerships, research, education, and a growing global community.

A new product, with a launch that doubled its funding goal.
SkyMapper has continued to grow, from its original telescope network into a wider ecosystem of connected products, observational tools, and ways for people to participate. As new products such as SkySphere emerged, we continued expanding the brand through product visuals, campaign creative, website experiences, social content, and community outreach. For the SkySphere Kickstarter, we helped bring the launch into the existing SkyMapper world across the website and campaign visuals. The campaign went on to raise more than $150,000 in July 2026, – twice its original goal. The system was never designed to stand still. It was built to make room for whatever SkyMapper discovered next.
Brand Character

Giving curiosity a face.
Kosmo, SkyMapper’s gecko, was created to bring warmth, curiosity, and a slightly unexpected personality into the brand. The character gave SkyMapper a more human way to connect with its growing community, particularly with students, educators, citizen scientists, telescope owners, and people encountering the project at events. Kosmo moved naturally from the digital brand into the physical world, appearing across social content, educational materials, stickers, keychains, T-shirts, event materials, and other pieces the community could collect and share. In a world of advanced instruments and enormous questions, Kosmo offered a simple point of connection: a curious companion, always looking up.
